What We’re About

As large news organizations become more cost-conscious, we believe there is a need to find cheaper solutions to maintain high quality and reliable foreign coverage.

Backpackjournalist.org is a collaborative international professional reporting project by journalists, Anna Sussman and Jonathan Jones, intended to generate stories of global interest from countries in the African Great Lakes region and the Great Rift Valley, the Indian subcontinent, and South East Asia.

Our reporting specializes in immigration, poverty, human rights, race, conflict, big business and the environment – issues with a global impact. Through print, photography, audio and video reporting, we aim to get at the heart of a story with in depth, professional reporting.

How We Do It

Using high-definition digital cameras and sound equipment, backpackjournalist.org delivers the latest photography, print, video and radio investigative features from abroad to mainstream and niche outlets.
The original multiplatform journalism available from our journalists is highly adaptable to the changing news market and easily accessible to news consumers.

Why Backpackjournalist.org?

Backpackjournalist.org is run by highly-trained, professional journalists. In an effort to produce full and honest reports with reliable information, we will always verify details to the fullest extent possible.

All reports associated with the project adhere to the ethical code of conduct as outlined by the Society of Professional Journalists: http://www.spj.org/ethics_code.asp.
